City of Brampton Enforcement and Bylaw Services
OUR RIGHTS AS HOMEOWNERS
What rights do home owners have? We buy a house, pay property taxes along with other taxes which include schools, parks maintenance, sewage, etc., but still have to cut the City Property grass and keep the boulevard and sidewalks clean. It makes sense for homeowners to keep their own property neat and clean, but have to clean the city property? What sense does that make? We're actually working not only for the City, free of charge, but we're cleaning after people that decide to walk by and instead of throwing their cans, cups, plastic bags, etc. inside the garbage containers, they rather throw it on the grownd. Why? Because they have us homeowners doing it for them. And why? Because the City of Brampton decided that owners have to do it.
Last week, I received two letter from the City. One was giving me72 hours to cut the grass on the boulevard, or they would send people to do it and they would then charge me$313.00 MINIMUM. The other one was giving me 3 days to clean the sidewalk and the boulevard or they would send someone to do it and I would be charged a MINIMUM OF $482.40.
Since I moved here, which was end of November of 2010, I have contacted the City of Brampton several times in regards to garbage left on the sidewalks and flying over to my property. I have asked them if there was a way of inserting a sign in the area letting people know that littering was against the law. I know some areas have that as well as video cameras. Nothing has been done about anything, because they rather give homeowners ultimatums and they rather make them do the work. So we actually don't have any rights! We spend money buying a home, fixing it, maintaining it, because we want to live decently, but at what cost? What are the benefits of actually owning a home?
I was just outside cleaning my yard, fixing my garden, when two teenage boys walked by. One of them was holding a large pop cup and decided to leave it on the sidewalk and started walking away when I reminded him that there was a garbage can right on the sidewalk. They looked at me, walked right passed the garbage can and about 100 feet up the street, they bent down and left the cup right in the center of the sidewalk, then, looked back down at me and kept on walking....so, the people living up the street have to clean up/grab the cup they left on the ground because the City of Brampton thinks that's our job.
Anyone that is in the same situation, please contact me. I would like to do something to resolve this problem, but alone, I can't do anything. If you are a homeowner and don't agree with the City bylaws; Think that your rights are being violated, please contact me. Together we might be able to do something.
